MOUNTAIN MONERGISM
West Virginia Theology History
The early settlement of western Virginia (before West Virginia statehood )was not an ecclesiastical blank slate; it was actively carved out by specific denominations that carried a strict Reformed theology down the Great Wagon Road and across the Allegheny Mountains.
• Particular (Regular) Baptists: While modern Appalachian religion is often associated with free-will theology, the earliest Baptist churches established in western Virginia—such as those in the Greenbrier, Potomac, and Kanawha valleys—were overwhelmingly Regular Baptists. They adhered to the London Baptist Confession of 1689 (or its American equivalent, the Philadelphia Confession). These were “Particular” Baptists, meaning they held firmly to a Calvinistic view of election and limited atonement.
• Presbyterians (Scotch-Irish): The Scotch-Irish made up a massive portion of the early frontier population. They brought a rigorous, uncompromising Presbyterianism defined by the Westminster Confession of Faith. They believed deeply in the absolute sovereignty of God, total depravity, and predestination. For these settlers, life on a harsh, dangerous frontier was bearable precisely because they believed every event was governed by God’s sovereign, immutable decree.
• German Reformed and Continental Settlers: German pioneers who filled the Eastern Panhandle and parts of the Monongahela Valley brought the Heidelberg Catechism. Along with the Calvinistic wing of the early Lutherans, their theology emphasized a highly ordered, covenantal view of Christian life and worship.
This theological framework manifested in distinct ways on the early frontier, differing greatly from modern expectations of pioneer religion:
• Intellectual and Orderly Worship: Because Reformed theology places a premium on the mind and the correct handling of Scripture, early services focused heavily on long, expository, doctrinal preaching. Worship was strictly regulated and orderly, generally avoiding the highly emotional, ecstatic expressions that developed later.
• A Providential Worldview: Facing constant hardships—such as the seasonal anxieties of frontier raiding periods, isolation, and disease—these settlers did not view God as a passive observer waiting on human decisions. They viewed Him as an active, primary cause. This monergistic understanding of life provided immense psychological and spiritual comfort amidst the extreme unpredictability of the wilderness.
• Covenantal Communities: Church discipline was strict. Congregations acted as local courts, holding members accountable to biblical standards of morality, debt repayment, and neighborly conduct, viewing the community as an interconnected covenant body before God.
It is in light of this rich theological heritage—and the profound shift away from it—that Mountain Monergism and MM Books exists. Our mission is to recover and renew the historic, Reformed doctrines that once formed the bedrock of West Virginia’s spiritual life. We seek to shine a light on the deep well of confessional theology that guided our forebears: a theology rooted in the sovereignty of God, the primacy of Scripture, and worship that engages both mind and heart in reverence rather than mere emotion.
Mountain Monergism is dedicated to providing resources, teaching, and community for those who long for a more substantive, God-centered faith. We believe that the monergistic understanding of salvation—not dependent on human will or emotional experience, but on God’s gracious initiative—offers greater comfort, assurance, and depth than the revivalist traditions that later took hold. Our aim is not simply nostalgia, but a thoughtful return to what we believe is the better way: a faith anchored in historic confessions, robust doctrine, and the unchanging character of God.
In a region shaped by centuries of spiritual fervor and shifting religious winds, Mountain Monergism stands to remind our generation of the deep roots and enduring truths that sustained the earliest believers of these mountains. We invite all who share this longing to join us in rediscovering and living out the theology that once shaped the heart of West Virginia.

Chapter 20
Chapter 20 of Revelation is one of the most important chapters in the Bible. How you interpret this chapter will influence your overall understanding of Scripture and your perception of Christianity. The author carefully analyzes this chapter, demonstrating how key phrases and concepts—such as the Millennial Reign of Christ, the Binding of Satan, and the Resurrection of the Dead—create vivid imagery that supports the theme of the expansion of God’s Kingdom. Hale makes a compelling case for Amillennialism and provides a framework for reading and understanding Revelation, supported by numerous Scripture passages. The book titled "Chapter 20" also presents a detailed literary structure for analyzing Revelation.

Broken And Content: A Devotion on Ecclesiastes
What does it mean to live well in a world that is fundamentally broken? That is the question at the heart of Broken and Content, a rich and searching devotional journey through the book of Ecclesiastes. Written for ordinary people navigating the exhausting realities of modern life, this book invites readers to sit with one of Scripture’s most honest and unsettling voices — the Preacher — and to discover, perhaps surprisingly, that the path to true contentment runs directly through our brokenness, not around it. Ecclesiastes has long been regarded as the Bible’s most perplexing book. Its recurring cry that “all is hebel” — vapor, vanity, a breath — can feel more like despair than devotion. But Broken and Content refuses to domesticate or sanitize the Preacher’s words. Instead, it takes them with full seriousness, tracing the restless human soul as it chases pleasure, projects, possessions, entertainment, and even sex in search of something that will finally satisfy. Each of these pursuits is examined with pastoral honesty, drawing on the vivid imagery of the “City of Nod” — a world of restless wandering east of Eden — to show how deeply our misdirected longings reflect the human condition after the Fall.

God's Salvation Manifesto
Across the centuries, visionaries have tried to diagnose and heal humanity’s pain. Manifestos have been written, revolutions waged, and ideologies tested: • Common Sense by Thomas Paine • Marx’s Communist Manifesto • Chairman Mao Tse-tung “Little Red Book.” • The Humanist Manifesto. Each promised to fix problems we faced, but each failed to deliver. But what if God himself had written a manifesto? As it turns out, he has. God’s Salvation Manifesto offers the answer that is both intellectually satisfying and spiritually transformative. Whether you are new to Christianity or a lifelong believer, this book will deepen your understanding of grace, justice, and salvation. It is a manifesto for our time—a bold declaration that only in Christ can the brokenness of the world, and of our own hearts, be truly healed.

1 Samuel: Looking for a Leader
The Old Testament book of 1 Samuel records the story of three important leaders in Israel’s history: Samuel, Saul, and David. The lives of these flawed men showcase God’s gracious response to ancient Israel’s leadership crisis, offering valuable lessons related to why leaders fail, the impact this failure can have on God's people, and what it means to model godly leadership—even today. In this accessible commentary, John Woodhouse shows how 1 Samuel reveals the importance of true leadership and the character of the godly leader. More significantly, this volume points forward to Jesus Christ, the fulfillment of God’s promises to his people and the only perfect leader the world has ever known. Those who preach and teach God's Word will find this an invaluable resource as they seek to help others embrace 1 Samuel's timely message.

As violence erupts and alliances shift, crime families from distant cities tighten their grip. The Christian’s Reasonable Service, 4 Volumes
"If you were stranded on a remote island, what book (other than the Bible) would you want to bring? I've always said I would take my favorite systematic theology ever written: The Christian's Reasonable Service." —Joel Beeke First published in 1700, The Christian's Reasonable Service (De Redelijke Godsdienst) ran through twenty Dutch editions in the eighteenth century alone! The title is derived from Romans 12:1, “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.” It expresses what God requires from man, and particularly from the Christian, that he serve Him in Spirit and in truth—intelligently, rationally, and in harmony with and response to God’s revelation of Himself, His Word.
